Frequently Asked Questions

Organizational Mission

Pie's mission is to enable small businesses to thrive by making commercial insurance affordable and as easy as pie, and the proof shows up in the product, the customer relationships, and the way Pie-oneers talk about their work. Crossing the milestone of 55,000 policies is one tangible signal that the mission is resonating. Each of those policies represents a small business owner who now has coverage that protects their people, often coverage that was harder to access or more expensive before Pie came along.

Internally, mission alignment isn't just a talking point. Pie-oneers across departments consistently connect their roles to Pie's broader impact, whether they're improving the claims experience for an injured worker, building technology that simplifies the quoting process, or supporting small business owners who have never navigated workers' compensation before. Leadership reinforces the mission at every all-hands and builds it into how the company sets goals and measures success.

Authenticity

Pie's values show up most clearly in how the company behaves when things are hard, not just when things are easy. Transparent communication during periods of change, honest conversations about company performance at all-hands meetings, and a leadership culture that names challenges rather than papering over them are the ways Pie demonstrates that its values aren't just wall art.

Pie-oneers consistently point to leadership credibility as one of Pie's strengths. When the company has navigated changes, including leadership transitions and market shifts, the response has been direct and respectful communication rather than spin. That track record of follow-through is what gives Pie's stated values their weight. A value only means something if the company actually behaves consistently with it under pressure, and at Pie, Pie-oneers say it does.

Pie Insurance Employee Perspectives

Tell us about Pie Insurance’s mission. How does that mission influence the company culture, and did it impact your decision to join the team?

Pie’s mission is to empower small businesses by making commercial insurance affordable and easy as pie, and that absolutely influenced my decision to join. I come from a small business family, so the company’s mission, plus the intersection of technology and commercial insurance, made Pie a high-interest company when I started actively seeking new roles in late 2018. My dad worked in his home office when I was growing up, and it became clear to me that making the move from a one-person operation to a small business owner with one or more employees was cost-prohibitive. I know if an insurance company like Pie had existed back then, he would have found it and utilized it to grow his company. My dad gave me my love of technology and using it to make people’s lives easier, and Pie’s mission made it an easy decision to join the team. I’ve loved every minute, and my six and a half years at Pie is the longest I’ve ever worked at any company. It’s because I love what we do, and I’ve seen firsthand the positive impact we can have on small businesses.

From your perspective, how does your work connect to the overall company mission?

My role involves supporting a full array of internal and external systems and stakeholders. Because my first several years at Pie were in the underwriting department, I have an end user’s familiarity with systems and processes, which helps me troubleshoot and solve problems in real time. I contribute to making things easy as pie by advising on solutions for both internal and external users, ensuring the process is as smooth as possible from submitting the business for a quote all the way through policy renewal. I’m often able to provide resolutions to problems as they happen, while using that information to identify potential workflow improvements for the future.

What advice would you give a jobseeker hoping to join Pie Insurance?

You need to be comfortable with change. We are an agile organization, and we experiment frequently. When I was a manager, I would often tell candidates that Pie is not a place to work if you want to do the same thing every day. One of my favorite things about working here is that we have really embraced a test-and-learn approach, and it has proven successful. Along with curiosity, Pie values a sense of ownership, so another important thing to have going in is a desire to help across the business. We work cross-functionally in ways I haven’t seen at other companies, and I believe it’s one of our best competitive advantages.
