Xero Employee Perspectives
What are you working on at the moment?
Right now, I’m working on a few exciting things in the sustainability space. A big focus is reducing our carbon emissions across our supply chain and exploring how we can use technology to support this. I’m also supporting our WX team to increase the share of renewable energy across our offices.
On the data side, I’m exploring how we can bring AI and automation into our carbon calculation process for Xero’s Annual Sustainability Report and upskilling in Tableau, so we can dig deeper into our data, spot trends, and find ways to make our operations more efficient.
It’s a mix of strategy, technical work, and cross-team collaboration that keeps things exciting.
What are your priorities over the next 12 months?
The first is continuing to support Xero’s climate strategy and our commitment to reducing emissions. I’ll be exploring opportunities to purchase additional Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) to lower emissions from employee travel (did you know we recently joined the QANTAS SAF coalition?); identifying ways to improve travel efficiency; and working with WX to review electricity contracts and increase our use of renewable energy, as well as the purchase of Renewable Energy Certificates where needed in all of our offices.
The second is preparing our carbon-related disclosures for the Annual Sustainability Report, including a subset of reporting required under new Australian climate legislation. This is a complex and collaborative project involving very talented folks across Finance, WX, Engineering, Marketing and Sustainability to gather data on everything from office utilities and travel to spend on services like cloud hosting, advertising/digital marketing, and many more. We then use this data to calculate Xero’s carbon inventory to track our progress and guide action against our emissions reduction strategy and targets.
