When it comes to pharmaceuticals, India is a global powerhouse. Not only does it manufacture more than half of the world’s vaccines, but it is also the largest global supplier of generic medicines — earning it the title of “pharmacy of the world.” 

This prominence has attracted many pharmaceutical companies to India’s capital territory, Delhi. Pfizer is a household name in the pharmaceutical industry. In addition to manufacturing popular drugs like Viagra, Advil and Zoloft, it is perhaps best known for creating the first FDA-authorized Covid-19 vaccine, which was developed in partnership with German biotech company BioNTech. The company’s global headquarters is in New York, but it has several facilities and offices throughout India, including in Delhi.

 

Akums is India’s largest contract manufacturing pharmaceutical company, according to its website, meaning that it makes products on behalf of other companies. Bayer, Dr. Reddy’s, Wockhardt and GNC are among its most prominent business partners. With nearly a dozen manufacturing facilities throughout India, the company makes various pharmaceutical tablets, capsules and syrups, as well as cosmetic and dermatology products like shampoos, serums and toothpaste.

 

Panacea Biotec is one of India’s largest vaccine manufacturers, according to its website, producing inoculations for everything from polio to hepatitis B. It also researches, makes and markets various pharmaceutical formulations, biosimilars and natural products, which are then sold in more than 100 countries.

 

With more than 1,500 products across 65 therapeutic categories, Cipla is the third-largest drug producer in India. The company was founded in 1935 and has since made a name for itself over the years in helping to provide more affordable treatments for notorious illnesses like AIDS and the avian flu. It also develops medication to treat respiratory diseases, diabetes, cardiovascular diseases and depression. Cipla’s corporate headquarters is in Mumbai, but it also has a large workforce in Delhi, employing about 2,000 people here. 

 

Jagsonpal Pharmaceuticals develops and manufactures bulk drugs and pharmaceutical formulations, particularly those relating to women’s health. Based in Delhi, Mankind Pharma operates 25 factories and six research and development facilities throughout India. The company focuses on providing cost-effective treatments for everything from arthritis to acne scars. Nearly all of Mankind Pharma’s sales are made in India, solidifying its position as the nation’s fourth-largest pharmaceutical company.

It manufactures and markets a wide variety of specialty prescription medicines, particularly in areas like psychiatry, dermatology and oncology, as well as over-the-counter products like vitamins and topical creams. While the company’s main office is in Mumbai, it has dozens of manufacturing facilities all over the world, including in Delhi.  

 

Systopic Laboratories focuses on pharmaceutical manufacturing. Founded in 1984, the company got its start in orthopedics, and now makes drugs for a variety of areas, including dermatology, gynecology, diabetology and cardiology. Its main corporate office is in New Delhi, but it has several other locations throughout India, including major cities like Chennai, Bangalore and Pune.

 

Aimil Pharmaceuticals specializes in the manufacturing and marketing of herbal health products, particularly those rooted in ayurveda, an ancient Indian medicine system that involves maintaining one’s body and mind through proper diet and lifestyle. The company offers pharmaceuticals that cover everything from cholesterol to brain health, as well as medicine made specifically for pets and livestock. 

 

Specializing in areas like pediatrics, anti-infectives, and asthma treatments, Lupin makes both branded and generic medications, biosimilars and active pharmaceutical ingredients. Morepen Laboratories makes more than 800 different kinds of active pharmaceutical ingredients, branded and generic formulations and home health products at its manufacturing facilities throughout India.
