Build and maintain backend-heavy full-stack applications primarily with PHP, while contributing to Node.js services, APIs, databases, caching, event-driven systems, infrastructure, and frontend components. Diagnose complex production issues through logs, metrics, and traces; improve reliability, performance, security, and maintainability; and own solutions from design through deployment and monitoring. Participate in architecture discussions, code reviews, automation, and cross-functional problem-solving while applying modern engineering and AI-assisted development practices.
About the Role
We are looking for a Senior Software Engineer with 3+ years of experience to join our engineering team and build, maintain, and evolve reliable, scalable software products.
This is a backend-heavy full-stack role. You will primarily work on backend systems and services while also contributing to frontend components, APIs, integrations, and infrastructure when required. The ideal candidate is hands-on, strong at debugging complex production issues, and comfortable working across different layers of a technology stack.
You should have strong experience with PHP and backend development, along with practical exposure to Node.js, SQL, Redis, event-driven systems, and cloud technologies. We are particularly interested in engineers who actively keep up with modern engineering practices and use AI-assisted development tools to improve productivity, code quality, and problem-solving.
The role will involve working on real-world engineering problems where ownership, sound technical judgment, and the ability to understand and troubleshoot existing systems are as important as writing new code.
- Design, develop, and maintain scalable, reliable, and maintainable backend services and APIs, primarily using PHP.
- Build and enhance services and integrations using Node.js where appropriate.
- Work with relational databases and SQL, including schema design, query optimization, indexing, and troubleshooting database performance issues.
- Design and implement effective caching strategies using Redis for performance, scalability, and distributed application requirements.
- Work with event-driven and asynchronous architectures, including queues, background jobs, event processing, and related failure-handling patterns.
- Contribute to frontend development when required, working across the stack to deliver complete product functionality.
- Investigate and resolve complex production issues, including application, database, infrastructure, performance, and integration-related problems.
- Analyze logs, traces, metrics, and application behavior to identify root causes, rather than relying only on surface-level fixes.
- Design solutions that consider performance, scalability, reliability, security, and maintainability.
- Work with AWS services and cloud infrastructure to deploy, operate, and troubleshoot applications.
- Write clean, testable, well-structured code and contribute to improving engineering standards and development practices.
- Participate in code reviews, technical discussions, design reviews, and architectural decisions.
- Automate repetitive engineering and operational tasks wherever possible.
- Work closely with Product, QA, Support, and other engineering teams to understand requirements and solve customer-impacting problems.
- Take ownership of features and technical problems end-to-end, from understanding the problem to implementation, deployment, monitoring, and resolution.
- Stay current with modern technologies, development practices, and AI-powered engineering tools, and identify opportunities to use them effectively.
- 3+ years of professional software engineering experience with strong hands-on production experience.
- Strong hands-on experience with PHP and backend development.
- Good practical experience with Node.js and building backend services/APIs.
- Strong understanding of SQL and relational databases, including query optimization, indexing, and database design fundamentals.
- Hands-on experience with Redis, including caching and/or other key-value use cases.
- Understanding of event-driven and asynchronous architectures, such as queues, workers, background processing, and event-based communication.
- Basic working knowledge of AWS and cloud fundamentals, including concepts such as compute, storage, networking, and managed services.
- Strong debugging, troubleshooting, and root-cause analysis skills.
- Good understanding of REST APIs, HTTP, authentication, and common backend architecture patterns.
- Ability to work effectively with an existing codebase, understand unfamiliar systems quickly, and make safe changes in production environments.
- Strong ownership and problem-solving skills, with the ability to independently drive technical problems to resolution.
- Good understanding of software engineering fundamentals, including data structures, algorithms, design principles, testing, version control, and code quality.
- Experience with Docker and containerized application development.
- Basic understanding of Kubernetes and container orchestration.
- Experience working with cron jobs, scheduled processes, background workers, and batch jobs.
- Familiarity with monitoring, logging, alerting, tracing, and application observability tools.
- Experience with CI/CD pipelines and deployment automation.
- Experience with message brokers or event-streaming technologies such as Kafka, RabbitMQ, SQS, or similar systems.
- Experience with AWS services such as ECS/EKS, Lambda, SQS, S3, RDS, CloudWatch, or Kinesis.
- Experience with frontend technologies such as JavaScript/TypeScript, React, or similar frameworks.
- Experience with performance optimization and debugging high-volume or distributed systems.
- Experience building automation tools, scripts, or internal developer tooling.
- Familiarity with AI-assisted software development tools such as coding agents, AI-powered IDEs, code generation/review tools, or LLM-based developer workflows.
- Experience working in a SaaS, product engineering, or high-scale environment.
- You can independently understand, develop, debug, and maintain backend systems with minimal supervision.
- Production issues are investigated systematically, with clear root-cause analysis and preventive solutions rather than temporary fixes.
- Services and APIs are reliable, performant, secure, and maintainable.
- Database and caching strategies are designed thoughtfully as system scale and traffic increase.
- You can comfortably navigate across the backend, database, infrastructure, and frontend layers when solving an engineering problem.
- You proactively identify opportunities for automation, performance improvement, reliability, and technical debt reduction.
- You contribute meaningfully to code reviews, architecture discussions, and overall engineering quality.
- You use modern tools—including AI-assisted development tools—pragmatically to improve engineering velocity without compromising code quality.
- You take ownership of problems end-to-end and consistently deliver high-quality solutions.
We are looking for an engineer who is hands-on, curious, and comfortable solving ambiguous technical problems.
You don't need to know every technology listed above. What matters most is strong backend fundamentals, the ability to learn quickly, willingness to work across the stack, and a genuine interest in understanding how systems work.
If you enjoy debugging difficult problems, improving existing systems, learning new technologies, and building software that works reliably in production, this role could be a great fit.
