Capital One Employee Perspectives
Backed by a culture that encourages associates to discover and pursue their own unique paths of career growth, Chase believes a key reason so many associates experience success is because of the people and leaders who invest in each other.
“Career growth is important, but it isn’t something you have to figure out alone here at Capital One. Since joining Capital One, I’ve found work that I’m passionate about, leaders that are invested in my growth and a place that rewards my drive to succeed, all while making friends along the way.”
When Josh joined Capital One after studying business and marketing, he faced a rapid learning curve in his role as a commercial credit analyst. But he was able to find his footing because of a supportive and accessible environment where associates can freely ask questions.
“When I first joined, I was absorbing a massive amount of information, but I quickly realized how open and willing everyone was to help,” Josh said. “People truly took the time to ensure I wasn't just hearing the concepts, but actually understanding them.”
What new skill or role did you want to learn, and why was this important to you?
Coming into my role, I had a very limited technical background. However, I knew I wanted to grow my AI and machine learning skills to better understand the data I’m looking at. In a world where the use of data is expanding at an incredible pace, I believe these technologies are integral components to the future of business analysis. I wanted to learn how to use AI tools as a guide to parse through large amounts of data and really focus on the most important highlights. Mastering this was important because I wanted to move beyond surface-level tasks and take on more abstract, white-space business challenges.
How did Capital One help support this time of learning and/or professional development?
Capital One provided me with room to test and explore through a deep culture of experimentation. Specifically, while creating a policy for fraud alerting, I was encouraged to dive directly into our machine learning models to identify variables that predict fraudulent behavior. This project involved hands-on experimentation with our AI toolkits, getting feedback and developing a data-driven methodology for our alerting. My manager empowered me to help shape our annual fraud strategy, where I aligned business goals with technical execution across our data science and tech teams
What was the outcome of this experience? How did it impact your future growth in your profession?
We launched a new check deposit model that catches more fraud while flagging fewer honest small business owners by mistake. This meant our customers could access their funds more easily and without unnecessary friction, ensuring our fraud protections never got in the way of their daily business operations. By using machine learning to isolate which variables were truly important, we were able to create a much more precise alerting policy. This experience has been transformative. It provided a proven framework for addressing complex root causes and gave me the confidence to lead projects that connect high-tech execution with a truly human-centric strategy.
