ABOUT THE ROLE


Torch is looking for a Sr. Manager of Platform Engineering to support our mission of empowering individuals and organizations through enhanced digital experiences. This role will report to the CTO and will lead a team of diverse skill sets, including software architecture, development, DevOps, and systems administration. The mission of the team is to empower the product development teams by providing robust, scalable, and efficient platform, education, and guidance that streamlines the software development lifecycle, from coding to deployment and operations.


We are looking for an experienced and seasoned technology leader who can act as the visionary and leader for Torch’s platform. The platform team is responsible for the software architecture vision, the developer experience at torch, patch and vulnerability management, deployment and release management, and shared infrastructure and services.


You will play a key role in driving the vision and implementation for Torch’s development platform and leading and mentoring Torch’s platform engineering team. The ideal candidate will bring both technical expertise and strategic insight, driving the team to deliver results that align with Torch's overarching goals of growth and customer satisfaction.

YOUR POSITION

  • Collaborate with product and engineering teams to build creative solutions for developer experience and infrastructure needs
  • Lead and mentor a team with a broad range of skills including AWS Infrastructure, CDK and Cloudformation, Github Actions and CI/CD Pipelines, Kubernetes and ECS based docker deployments, Software Architecture, Ruby and Python development, Vulnerability management with Inspector and Grype
  • Work closely with Torch’s Principal Information Security Specialist to help implement Torch’s Security program which includes ISO 27001, ISO 27701, SOC2 Type 2, NIST 800-53 and GDPR
  • Identify opportunities for innovation and adoption using PaaS or Open Source components wherever possible
  • Take part in peer code review processes to help ensure a high standard of quality

YOUR EXPERIENCE - Basic Requirements

  • 12 years of overall experience with 5 years in management in platform engineering, devops, and software development.
  • Comprehensive understanding of platform engineering or devops concepts such as software delivery pipelines, testing strategies, continual improvement, and developer experience.
  • Direct experience with Kubernetes, CDK, Cloudformation, Github Actions, Ruby, Python, etc, to be able to mentor and unblock the team.
  • Experience in one or more programming languages and SaaS software delivery using microservices. Torch uses Ruby, Python, JavaScript, TypeScript, and NodeJS
  • Experience with AWS
  • Experience with SaaS software architecture, distributed application design patterns, asynchronous programming, best practices, and data design. 
  • Setting up and maintaining CI/CD pipelines
  • Devising and executing build and deployment strategies
  • A degree in Computer Science, a related STEM field, or equivalent professional experience

YOUR EXPERIENCE - Nice to have

  • Experience with Serverless programming and container based development
  • Knowledge of Python , Flask, FastAPI and associated technologies
  • Knowledge of security best practices and adherence to data protection regulations
  • Familiarity with front-end and back-end performance optimization techniques
  • Exposure to working within and extending design systems (storybook), E2E testing (cypress), unit testing, etc.
  • Experience with PostgreSQLDeeper security experience with SOC2, GDPR and ISO

INTERVIEW PROCESS - Consists of the following:

  • Hiring manager interview with the CTO (60 minutes) 
  • Technical interview with a leader from the Platform team (60 minutes)
  • Technical Interview with Principal Engineer from the Platform team (60 minutes)
  • Leadership/Cultural Fit Interview with the CEO (45 minutes)
