Mastercard is seeking a Senior Software Engineer (Level 7) with experience designing and building agentic systems, treating AI agents as production software components rather than experimental artifacts.
In this role, you will focus on building the platform, orchestration, and runtime capabilities that allow AI agents and tools to execute safely and observably inside market-facing products. You will partner closely with AI Engineers but retain ownership of system level concerns such as identity, authorization, attribution, reliability, and operational controls.
This role is ideal for engineers who excel in building distributed systems and are motivated by applying those fundamentals to modern AI driven architectures.Role & Responsibilities
As a Senior Software Engineer - Agentic Systems, you will:• Design and build scalable, resilient software systems that orchestrate AI agents, tools, and services within enterprise environments. • Treat agents as execution primitives, ensuring each action is explicitly attributable, authorized, auditable, and observable.• Implement orchestration patterns such as supervisors, routers, planners, and stateful workflows for multi step agent execution.• Build frameworks for tool invocation, error handling, retries, and compensating actions in agent driven workflows.• Integrate identity, permissions, and policy enforcement directly into agent execution paths.• Ensure systems meet Mastercard standards for reliability, security, compliance, and performance.• Collaborate with AI Engineers to integrate models and prompts as components within larger systems.• Own operational aspects of agentic platforms, including logging, monitoring, tracing, and incident response.• Review code, mentor peers, and contribute to shared engineering standards and architectural decisions.Required Experience & Skills
• Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or equivalent practical experience.• Significant professional experience building distributed, production grade software systems.• Strong proficiency in backend software development (e.g., Java, Kotlin, Python, or similar).• Experience designing APIs, services, and asynchronous workflows.• Deep understanding of authentication, authorization, and secure service to service communication.• Experience operating systems with high reliability, availability, and regulatory requirements.• Ability to work effectively in ambiguous problem spaces and evolve systems iteratively.Nice to Have
• Experience building systems that integrate LLMs or AI services.• Familiarity with agent frameworks, workflow engines, or orchestration platforms.• Experience designing audit friendly, policy driven platforms.Leveling & Scope
