Purpose


CEEW seeks to hire a Senior Program Lead for its Industrial Sustainability (IS) team. The IS team has four broad focus areas – energy transition and industrial decarbonisation; carbon management that includes carbon pricing and CCUS; RD&D and Innovation; and circular economy. There is an economics perspective associated with each of these areas. We are looking for an experienced macro economist who can guide team members in developing analyses in each of these areas. For example, we want to answer questions such as - what is the impact of energy transition on state economics; how will decarbonisation impact industrial competitiveness; how can the energy transition be made just; what is the impact of energy transition in terms of jobs and growth, and the quality of jobs; what carbon price mechanism is best suited for India and what would be the impact on the GDP from some form of carbon price; and what economic benefits (jobs and value addition) can be achieved through circular economy initiatives. 



Job Duties and Accountabilities


  • Identify specific research and policy questions within the focus areas identified above. The candidate is expected to have foresight and independently think about the challenges of the future. 

  • Engage with stakeholders to understand relevance and importance of research questions identified. Where necessary collaborate with peer organisations, academia, or other relevant stakeholders

  • Develop a methodology for the analyses with specific outputs, including identification of data sources, models, software, etc.

  • Direct or delegate tasks to juniors for specific research or components thereof.

  • Develop research outputs in various forms such as publications, journal papers, reports, op-eds, and articles

  • Develop working relationships with government ministries and agencies (central and state) to develop actionable work programmes

  • Work with senior researchers on conceptualising new projects (as and when needed) and support revenue generation for new projects

  • To participate in relevant conferences, workshops, training programmes as necessary to communicate research findings and gain insights on new research in focus areas

  • Support efforts to use new media platforms for the wide dissemination of CEEW's work and, in turn, closer engagement with the wider community.


Shortlisting Criteria


Education and experience

  • Master's or PhD (preferred) degree in Economics (and finance preferable)

  • Experience developing economic analyses across diverse focus areas

  • Experience in econometrics and proficiency in data analysis is critical

  • Experience with relevant softwares to develop models as necessary; proficiency in Excel a must

  • Minimum of 10 years of relevant experience

  • Experience in delegating work to juniors, as the hire will be expected to lead multiple projects and multiple junior researchers simultaneously


Key skills 

  • Must have strong research skills – ability to translate stakeholder needs into research/ policy questions is a key requisite, capability to carry out literature review and synthesis, and familiarity with research methods

  • Experience working with Excel is essential. Experience with software programmes such as Python, R, SAS, visualisation tools like tableau and spatial analysis tools like QGIS, Google Earth Engine etc. are preferred

  • Willingness to work on multi-disciplinary projects

  • Excellent written and oral communication skills

  •  Experience in dealing with stakeholders (industry, academic, government etc.) essential

  • Willingness to learn new research and project management skills.

  • Ability to identify creative solutions to vexing research and policy challenges

  • Ability to adapt and deliver under tight deadlines in a professional environment (policymaking often requires quick turnarounds)

  • Striving for rigour in research and quality in work output.

  • Ability to effectively work in a team while being able to independently drive research with minimum assistance, when time demands.

  • Ability and willingness to dig deeper into details, while also keeping a sense of the broader objectives and big picture.

  • Willingness to learn, grow and develop at a personal and professional front, at a rapid pace with a steep learning curve.

  • Ability to work in an interdisciplinary and multicultural environment.
