Job Description Summary
The Manager of User Experience is a people leader responsible for managing a small team of designers and/or researchers working on specific projects or features. This role collaborates with product and engineering teams to ensure quality design work is delivered on schedule, while supporting team member development and fostering effective collaboration. The Manager UX focuses on day-to-day team execution, removing blockers, and helping team members do their best work. This management role requires foundational coaching skills, clear communication, and the ability to coordinate work effectively within project constraints.
Essential Duties & Responsibilities
- Manages a small team of designers and/or researchers working on projects or features
- Sets clear expectations for deliverables and provides regular feedback to team members
- Creates work plans based on project requirements and team capacity
- Supports team members in developing their design and collaboration skills
- Collaborate with product and engineering teams to coordinate design work
- Provides status updates on team progress and upcoming deliverables
- Coordinates with peer designers to maintain consistency
- Manages team resources appropriately within project budgets
- Follows established workflows and ensures team uses design system components correctly
- Reviews designs to ensure quality and consistency with standards
- Raises user experience concerns in project planning discussions
- Coordinates with researchers to ensure insights inform design work
- Tracks team progress against project milestones and flags risks
- Addresses team dynamics and supports positive collaboration
- Participates in hiring and helps onboard new team members
Knowledge, Skills, and/or Abilities Required
- Ability to manage small UX teams on projects or features, including setting clear expectations, providing feedback, and supporting skill development
- Capability to create work plans based on project requirements and communicate effectively with product and engineering partners
- Understanding of project goals with ability to balance quality with timeline constraints
- Experience following established workflows, using design systems, and tracking progress against milestones
- Foundation in conducting design reviews, raising user experience concerns, and maintaining quality standards
- Basic experience coordinating research activities and encouraging evidence-informed design
- Ability to communicate effectively with project stakeholders and team members
- Developing coaching skills focused on supporting individual contributor growth
- Solid expertise in UX design principles and methodologies
- Ability to coordinate multiple activities with basic organizational skills
- Clear communication skills for team leadership and project collaboration
- Willingness to learn and adapt to team and project needs
Educational/Vocational/Previous Experience Recommendations
- Bachelor’s degree in design, HCI, Psychology, or related field
- 6+ years of experience in UX design or research
- 1-2+ years of people management experience or strong lead experience ready for management
- Demonstrated success delivering quality UX work on projects
- Experience of collaborating with product and engineering teams
- Familiarity with design systems and standard UX processes
- Track record of supporting peer development through mentoring or leading
Working Conditions
- Hybrid – Office depending on location with regular presence for team collaboration
- Minimal travel, occasional team meetings or company events
- Management position requires flexibility to support team and meet project deadlines
